The
Challenge
Driving passenger cars as well as commercial vehicles is changing fundamentally due to the ongoing introduction of new and advancement of existing assistance systems. Just a few decades ago, drivers had to permanently monitor all aspects and master all critical situations on their own. As of today, they gained support of numerous assistance systems: from the introduction anti-lock braking systems to assistance in maintaining speed and distance through Adaptive Cruise Controls, parking aids with camera support, to increasingly autonomous function sets, these systems have made vehicle use not only more convenient, but also safer.
However, with increasing automation, systems are also becoming more and more complex to develop. The main challenge is to make the systems reliable and at the same time also safe to use. There are numerous questions to be answered along the way, including, among others, the definition of the operating domains, reliable functionality of various components, as well as operability.
